United Kingdom introduces Electronic Travel Authorisation

From 2 April 2025, citizens of the European Union planning to travel to the UK will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Applications for an ETA can be submitted from 5 March 2025.

An ETA will be required for people who are exempt from the visa requirement or do not have a settled immigration status in the UK. The ETA fee is £10, and the authorisation will be valid for two years or until the expiry of the passport, whichever comes first. What else is worth knowing about the changes?

What is Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

ETA is an electronic document introduced by the UK Home Office that allows authorities to verify traveller data in advance. It aims to streamline border processes and increase security.

It is worth noting that people travelling to the UK who have an Electronic Travel Authorisation will be able to use this document multiple times during its period of validity.

Who is subject to the ETA requirement?

The ETA requirement applies to citizens of visa-free countries, including Poland, who plan to visit the UK for a short period (up to six months) for tourism, business, family or educational purposes.

The Electronic Travel Authorisation also covers people planning short-term stays under the visa waiver programme for creative industry workers and transit through the UK. When preparing for a trip to the UK, it is worth bearing in mind that the ETA requirement applies to all travellers – regardless of age and means of transport.

How do I get an Electronic Travel Authorisation?

Applications for ETAs can be submitted from 5 March 2025 via the UK ETA App or the UK government website. Each application is subject to an administrative fee of £10. The ETA authorisation will be linked to the traveller’s passport and will be valid for two years or until the passport expires.

What are the consequences of not having an Electronic Travel Authorisation?

The lack of a valid Electronic Travel Authorisation may result in refusal of entry to the UK – people without this document may be detained at the border and forced to return to their country. It is also worth bearing in mind that carriers may also refuse to transport people without an ETA.

Do you already know what Electronic Travel Authorisation is?

The introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) from 2 April 2025 is an important change for European Union citizens planning to travel to the UK. To avoid problems at the border, it is advisable to apply for an ETA well in advance and to make sure that all requirements related to the new authorisation system are met.
